The Julia Child Foundation
for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts
The Julia Child Foundation for Gastronomy and the Culinary Arts was created by Julia in 1995 for the purpose of supporting 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. In December of 2008, the Foundation Trustees designated five highly-qualified recipients whose work advances matters Julia valued. Grants have been made to support the work of the following organizations in 2009 (in alphabetical order):
Boston University Metropolitan College, Department of Gastronomy. Julia was instrumental in the formation and highly supportive of BU’s groundbreaking Master of Liberal Arts (MLA) in Gastronomy. The interdisciplinary program teaches students to view food through many different lenses – including anthropology, history, literary criticism, art history, and the natural sciences. www.bu.edu/met
Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP). Julia encouraged young people interested in cooking professionally to get solid training and work experience in good kitchens. C-CAP is a multi-faceted school-to-career program which links public high school students to the foodservice industry – including internships in top restaurants. www.ccapinc.org
The Culinary Institute of America. A strong believer in culinary education, Julia frequently recommended the prestigious CIA to aspiring professionals. The Julia Child Expendable Scholarship will provide support to a CIA student planning to pursue a career in food media or journalism. www.ciachef.edu
Spoons Across America, The Dinner Party Project. Julia was a passionate advocate for the joys of cooking and sharing the pleasures of the table with family and friends. The Dinner Party Project is a family-focused educational program for middle school students – including seasonal meal planning, nutrition, table setting, and cooking. spoonsacrossamerica.org
